  • History of Forsthofgut - how it all began

scroll for happiness

More than 400 years of history

The Forsthofgut's history as a hotel is inextricably linked with the region and nature. The house has been located in Leogang for 400 years and has been home to the Schmuck family for five generations. Since 1617, the traditional Forsthofgut has grown from a forestry operation to a luxurious nature hotel but has always remained a constant anchor thanks to its strong roots.

From a farm to a Nature Hotel

Our house number - Hütten No. 2 - bears witness to this: the Forsthofgut was one of the first houses in the Leogang district of Hütten. The history of the Forsthof, formerly written "Vorsthof", can be traced back 400 years. Even then, the agriculture and forestry operation was a year-round business and provided accommodation for forest workers. The first holiday guests stayed at the Forsthofgut in 1960 when Christoph Schmuck's grandparents rented out two rooms for the first time.

Five Generations

1905 marks the beginning of the Schmuck family history at the Forsthofgut. A lot has changed since then and the farm has grown into a luxury hotel. The foundation for this was laid by senior director Rupert Schmuck and his wife, Rosmarie, who converted the farm into a hotel. In 2006, Christoph Schmuck took over the Forsthofgut and, together with his wife, Christina, formed an extraordinary place of strength: a place to arrive in the here and now, for guests, employees, and his own family with daughters, Lena and Charlotte.

"The hotel complex was a great playground for us as children. Growing up with animals was the most beautiful thing for me. That's why I still have a strong connection with nature today," he says. "The hotel should be an anchor for the family, for the guests and the employees, something steady, a rock in increasingly confusing times. I hope the Forsthofgut will always be the place that, as in the past, gives my family strength and space to develop and the opportunity to leave their mark."

Like her husband, Christina grew up in the hospitality business and on a farm. "That's where my strong connection to living tradition and the will to realize it in modern architecture comes from. I always pay attention to the combination of the old and a fine, modern touch when choosing the furnishings, with great attention to detail. The Forsthofgut should be a place to arrive and feel good and always bring a smile to the face of the family, the staff, and the guests."

"When I think of the Forsthofgut, my fondest memories come to mind. I think of our family, the children, but also of farming and the new start we made together. With our small bed and breakfast, we laid the foundation for the development into a hotel. I also like to remember the satisfaction of the guests and the many friendships that have developed through the years of recurring visits. The Forsthofgut stands for family, comfort, coziness, and enjoyment."

"The Forsthofgut has developed very quickly: Within 30 years it went from a small bed and breakfast to a five-star nature hotel. I associate the most beautiful memories with the house. The estate is my childhood home, where I grew up together with three sisters - and here, together with my wife Rosmarie, I was able to create a beautiful home for our own three children, Birgit, Christoph, and Julia. For me, my home is part of my identity, it is my roots."
