Here, we combine the power of our unique surroundings with the comforts of a nature hotel in Austria, rooted in the region and open to the world. For us, it is not about going higher, further or faster. Instead, we focus on the considered use of natural resources and materials, preserving traditions and consciously experiencing special moments.
The forest and the Forsthofgut have been closely connected for many years, for centuries even. For us, the forest is the place that gives us strength. Together with the vast meadows, the gentle grassy mountains on one side, and the rugged stone mountains on the other, the forest is our dearest neighbour. So it is not surprising that the love for this special place in nature flows through the entire hotel - from the waldSPA to the weinWALD.
We place great importance on the considered use of resources and on caring for our surroundings. Naturhotel Forsthofgut holds both the EU Ecolabel and the Austrian Ecolabel. Both environmental labels are based on defined criteria for accommodation providers and set requirements in areas including environmental management, energy and water use, as well as waste prevention. Compliance with the respective criteria is independently verified.

If our favourite place is the forest, don't we have to do everything we can to protect it? We say: Yes. The forest is a real jack-of-all-trades and balances the regional climate. To ensure that this multi-talent continues to stay healthy and grow, we have launched a project that is very close to our hearts: The "waldLIEBE" tree sponsorship. To give something back to nature, we want to plant seedlings and create a new forest paradise. Take your chance to become a tree sponsor yourself and contribute to the "reforestation mission". Following a farm-to-table approach, we source as many regional ingredients as possible from our immediate surroundings in Leogang and nearby Saalfelden, just ten kilometres away. This is also home to the Haitzmann family and their Stechaubauernhof farm, which supplies around 70% of the vegetables we use at Forsthofgut. Around five tonnes of carrots alone come from the farm each year. The Stechaubauernhof has been a pioneer in organic farming for many years.

The ingredients used in our R50 dishes are sourced within a maximum radius of 50 kilometres, with many coming directly from our own Mauthof farm. This forms our R50 range of dishes, where traditional methods meet a modern twist.

At Forsthofgut, the holiday feeling begins the moment you arrive, with our in-house chauffeur service ensuring a relaxed and comfortable start to your stay. We are delighted to assist with your journey by train and to collect you in our hotel shuttle. Your return journey may also be arranged for you. In addition, complimentary pick-up is available from Saalfelden, Leogang and Hochfilzen train stations.

Our farm.
For generations, the members of the Schmuck family have not only been hosts but above all: farmers and forest managers. It has been our long-term desire to cultivate and process products from our farm for the Forsthofgut. With the Mauthof, this vision has become a reality. On the 21,8 hectares of meadows and pastures, chickens, lambs, geese, and pigs feel right at home. Herbs, berries, and mushrooms can be found in the forest around the farm. This completes the cycle. The Forsthofgut, which grew out of a farm, can once again use produce from its own farm in its kitchens.
The finest holidays are those that allow you to experience nature in all its richness. Around Naturhotel Forsthofgut, every season has its own rhythm, inviting you to discover the Salzburg region at a slower, more mindful pace.
Autumn in Leogang brings crisp mountain air, golden forests and peaceful trails right on your doorstep. It is a wonderful time to follow hiking trails through the autumn landscape or explore the surroundings by bike. Slowly, consciously and close to what truly matters.
Magnificent fallow deer and red deer live together with dwarf goats in our three-hectare game enclosure. Hotelier and host Christoph Schmuck himself takes care of feeding the majestic animals. Once a week, guests are allowed to accompany him.

Sustainability is not a single measure – it is a mindset. As a nature hotel, we combine genuine hospitality with a considered approach to our surroundings and their resources: with our own forest, which according to our 2025 ESG assessment sequesters around 460 tonnes of CO₂ each year, our own Mauthof farm, regional farm-to-table cuisine and an active reforestation project. Guests also have the option of arriving by train, with complimentary chauffeur service from the station. Our approach is reflected in everyday life – in many small and large decisions concerning nature and its resources.
