Andy Warhol

Andy Warhol (1928–1987) was an American artist and a central figure of the Pop Art movement. His work, which explored consumer culture, celebrity, and everyday objects, left a lasting impact on the art world. Spanning painting, silkscreen printing, film, and installation, Warhol’s oeuvre reflects the mass media and consumer habits of his time.

Long before becoming a pop art icon, Warhol made a name for himself in 1950s New York as a sought-after commercial illustrator.

ANDY WARHOL „n.t. (Shoes, Leg and Morning Glories)“, 1956

Gouache, Tinte, Graphit und Klebeband auf Papier

In this early work, Warhol combines delicate floral elements with fashionable accessories and fragmented body parts. The composition—featuring shoes, a leg, and morning glories—reflects his affinity for the world of fashion and his talent for transforming everyday objects into artistic arrangements. The use of adhesive tape as a design element lends the piece an experimental quality, foreshadowing Warhol’s later collage and silkscreen techniques.

Exhibitions

Among Andy Warhol’s most significant solo exhibitions are the 1970 retrospective at the Pasadena Art Museum, California; the Reigning Queens exhibition at the Leo Castelli Gallery, New York (1985); and more recent presentations at The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh. Other notable exhibitions include Oh Beauty at the Neue Nationalgalerie, Berlin (2024); Andy Warhol: After the Party at Fotografiska Berlin (2024); and This is Pop! at Fundación Unicaja, Cádiz (2025).
Warhol’s works have also been shown internationally as part of group exhibitions, including at MoMA and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and the Kunsthaus Zürich. The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh holds a special place, housing the world’s largest collection of the artist’s works—with over 900 paintings, 100 sculptures, and numerous drawings, films, and photographs. His works are also included in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art (New York), Tate Modern (London), Neue Nationalgalerie (Berlin), and Museum Ludwig (Cologne).
