Alkahest, 2011

Anselm Kiefer's Alkahest series consists of a series of monumental paintings, sculptures and overpainted photographs.
Alkahest is an artificial word from alchemy and refers to a solution whose recipe was sought by alchemists: With its help it should be possible to dissolve any substance or break it down into its elements.

In this work, the mountains and rocks are "dissolved" by the encounter with water, for example through erosion - the sediments shift and the mountain is removed piece by piece.
The liquid Alkahest, which could anticipate or accelerate this natural process, is contained in a jar attached to the centre of the painting. The question of how matter changes and how solidified structures dissolve has preoccupied Kiefer throughout his artistic career. The artist is also concerned with inner transformation and spirituality.
