The artist
Anselm Kiefer is a German artist whose unique works have gained worldwide recognition. He was born on 8 March 1945 in Donaueschingen, a small town in Germany. Kiefer grew up in a country scarred by the horrors of the Second World War and the Nazi past. These historical events had a strong influence on his work and his artistic endeavours.
Kiefer studied law, but switched to the art academy and created impressive works in the fields of painting, sculpture and installation. His large-format works use a variety of materials and offer a profound symbolism and level of meaning.
